Dont Die from Prostate Cancer

As many men if not more die of Prostate Cancer in Australia today then women from Breast Cancer our latest statistics show.

Unlike breast cancer which has been in the news for years with special day even held to raise awareness very little was heard about prostate cancer until 2008 when Sam Newman stepped forward admitting he had prostate cancer and allowed the media to cover his operation and ongoing progress.

Although the publicity led to a surge in prostate cancer awareness and men being tested unfortunately many men are still reluctant to talk about the subject or go for a test.

Prostate cancer is a disease in which cancer develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. It occurs when cells of the prostate mutate and begin to multiply uncontrollably.

These cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes.
Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse and erectile dysfunction.

Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease.

Although testing is recommended for men over 50 to be quite honest I feel that all males over the age of 30 should ask their doctor for at least the PSA blood test to be done regularly during their annual checkup.

Figures from the USA in 2008 Each year, more than 186,000 American men learn they have this disease and that Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in this country. Only skin cancer is more common.

Figures from Australia in 2009 show that 32 men learn that they have Prostate Cancer every day and that tragically on man dies every 3 hours from the disease.

prostate Approximately 18.700 men are diagnosed each year with the highest risk group being the 70’s and over where the ratio is 80 diagnosed in every 1000.

Latest studies have reveiled that Younger men in their 40’s diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer don’t live as long as older men facing the same diagnosis, this may have something to do with the fact that younger men in their late 30’s-40’s are not tested for the disease so therefore it is well advanced before it is discovered.

Prostate Cancer Prognosis

Patients with smaller, slow-growing, well-differentiated tumors tend to have the best prognosis with prostate cancer. Whether someone is alive and disease-free 10 or 15 years after diagnosis tends to depend more on the stage and grade of the cancer than on the choice of treatment.

If cancer is limited to the prostate and is well or moderately differentiated, the 5-year prognosis is considered excellent.
